My grandfather holding a picture of himself when he was 18 years old serving time in the navy.

I love to thank him a billion for letting me take pictures of him for my photojournalism assignment. He seems to be the only one I know who doesn't care about me taking photos of him, even though he's incredibly sick.

EDIT: Oh my I can't express how thankful I am for my third DD.

For those of you who don't know my grandfather has prostate cancer. He's doing better but he's not going to last too long, about a month ago we almost thought he was going to die. It was terrible. But at the moment he is going through physical therapy, it's a mystery that the last time I saw him (the photo) he couldn't even walk.

As for his time in the navy he served during the Korean Era from 1953-1955. He never really left the USA at the time so he never actually fought in war. To be honest I'm not sure what he did, nor dose my mother. I'll have to ask him later.

Hopefully that doesn't change your mind about this photo. This photo is really personal to me and my family.

As for my photojournalism skills I'm actually not that great of a photographer when it comes to photojournalism. If you've ever met me in real life you would learn very quickly that I am a shy person (also major pushover). It's quite rare for me to get a good photo like the one you see here.

I can't thank you all of how much your words mean to me. I've never gotten this many comments and faves before and I don't think I can comment on all of them but I'll be sure to read and appreciate every single one :).

Thank you all again.

EDIT: 2/4/13

I just wanted to give another big thank you to all of you who have given be big support of my photo.

You all have no idea how much it means to me to get feedback from a community of loving people who tell me to thank my grandfather for his service in the Navy.

My grandfather, Pete, died last Monday. And I am going to miss him greatly.

It was so very devastating to hear about his death. My mother especially. Right when she told me she was going to leave to go see him she got a call from her sister saying he had died.

My mother was there for him every week. She really did care for him.

My grandfather had been in and out of the hospital for three winters. I can not imagine myself doing something like that. He went through hell and back to stay alive. For the most part I'm glad he's not going to suffer anymore.

I'm glad I got to see my grandfather the day before he died. He couldn't cary on a conversation, but being able to see him one final time is all that maters for me.

It just doesn't feel like he's dead.

Thank you all again for the support. :)

This picture makes me feel bad :(

Getting old is a neat adventure but the fact that I'm eventually going to end is depressing, heh.

Yeah it is depressing but that's life. And by the time we're this old (or older) we'll learn to accept it. Plus it's something you shouldn't worry about. You're still young and have a lot more days to go through. :)

The saddest part of this photo is being able to see the rails of the hospital bed... It makes you almost wish you could have met his younger self.

I really like this picture, I really, really do. I don't know why but it makes me think of my grandfathers, both now dead. I loved them dearly and I agree with you, it still feels like they are alive. They will always be with us! :)

It is a strong picture and I love it.

The story behind this is really touching. It's always interesting to see a comparison of someone when they were young to them when they grow older. Great work; this is a well deserved DD!
